the team
Sophie, the granddaughter of a winemaker and agronomist, and Matthieu, an oenologist, founded Domaine La Croix Montjoie in 2009. After gaining valuable experience in various French vineyards, they, along with a group of wine enthusiasts, embarked on this venture. Now, as proud owners, Sophie and Matthieu pour their energy into every aspect of the estate, supported daily by a small, but passionate, dedicated and skilled team. The Domaine has been certified organic since 2021.
aoc vézelay
An historic wine-growing region planted since the Roman era, Vézelay reached its peak in the 19th century, when there were nearly 1,000 hectares of vines in production. Unfortunately, Phylloxera ravaged the vineyard and it was not until the 1970s that the first vines were seen again in Vézelay. Since then, the planted area has continued to grow. Today, 100 hectares of Chardonnay occupy the most beautiful hillsides around the eternal hill and its magnificent basilica.
rebuilding joy
The Domaine is located on the old farm of the village castle, where they once cultivated land, raised animals, and even produced wine. It is named after the Croix Montjoie at the village entrance, where pilgrims expressed joy when first laying eyes on the beauty of Vézelay. When Sophie and Matthieu started in 2009, nothing was in good condition, requiring annual investments to rehabilitate the buildings. Today, the place is magical, with a terrace facing Vézelay and revealing the foothills of the Morvan. Regardless of the season, nature and light present themselves joyfully. It is a welcoming and inclusive place that leaves no one unmoved!
